Former PRO-TEC president to lead project on transitioning from senior year of college

by Tom Perry

Marietta, Ohio (08/03/2018) — Headline: Marietta College announces 2018-19 Fitzgerald Executive-in-Residence

Paul Worstell, former PRO-TEC Coating Company President, has been named the 2018-19 Fitzgerald Executive-in-Residence (EIR) at Marietta College.

"I am excited for the opportunity to serve Marietta College students as the 2018-19 Fitzgerald Executive-in-Residence," Worstell said. "Our project, 'Senior Transition: Preparing for the Next Chapter,' will provide a framework for experiential learning and personal development."

This EIR program's purpose is to foster meaningful relationships between a senior executive for a major enterprise and students and faculty of the college. As the Executive-in-Residence, Worstell has the opportunity to make presentations to various groups as well as live on campus.

"With support and encouragement from Dr. Perruci, I am confident that our cohort will learn from each other and grow in a collaborative environment," Worstell said. "My vision for the program is to leverage highly engaged students in rigorous leadership study with strategic community partners so that our students and their employers will be highly satisfied. The goal is to differentiate our students as extremely competent and able to provide practical leadership and management skills on day one. We will be successful if our program is lasting and provides a template for success in future years."

Worstell received an MBA from the University of Findlay in 1999. He has spent 26 years with U.S. Steel's operations in Pittsburgh, and in 2010 he retired as the president of PRO-TEC Coating Company - a joint venture partnership between U.S. Steel and Kobe Steel of Japan. Since then he has spent his time speaking at conferences across the country discussing the topics of leadership and management.

"We are so fortunate to have the depth of leadership experience that Mr. Worstell will bring to this EIR Project," said Dr. Gama Perruci, Dean of McDonough. "I really hope the participating students will take full advantage of this incredible opportunity. Through this project, they will be mentored by an impressive leader and will certainly be well prepared to launch their own successful careers upon graduation."

Worstell's aim with this project is to better prepare seniors for the real world after graduation. Throughout the project, students will develop:

  • A Personal Leadership Philosophy (PLP) Statement
  • An effective resume
  • A Co-Curricular Transcript
  • A deeper understanding of options available after graduation

Perruci said the project should appeal to students of any major as its main focus is in "fostering a sense of proactivity and thoughtfulness that will maximize preparations for a smooth transition to the for-profit sector."

Graham Nesselrode '21 (Vienna, West Virginia), who is majoring in International Business and International Leadership Studies, will serve as the Student Coordinator for the Executive-in-Residence Project. The College's Career Center also will partner with some of the EIR activities during the academic year.
